Stop the Kurnell BESS Projects AMPOL & AUSGRID & Heavy Industry
The issue
Please sign our petition against the Kurnell Energy & Industry Precinct (KEIP). 800MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Industrial Precinct zoned for ‘Heavy Industry’ and the AUSGRID Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
Since as early as the 1950s, Kurnell has been under ceaseless exploitation by large corporations, leading to devastating environmental impacts.
Our beautiful coastlines and our wetlands - have all been damaged.
In 2014, the community witnessed the decommissioning of the oil refinery, leaving a fuel storage facility. Our community and the environment started gradually regaining its former beauty.
Now, the proposed implementation of the highly flammable lithium- Ion Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) next to Australia's largest fuel storage tanks (750 million litres) and the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) located on our only access road and next to valuable wetlands, threatens to undo this progress.
The residents of Kurnell, who have witnessed the damaging influence of heavy industry, are not prepared to experience the trauma all over again. The trauma of not being able to enter or exit the peninsula to take care of their homes, their friends and families.
The negative impacts of BESS installations on local environments and communities is well documented. Studies have highlighted the potential for surrounding vegetation and wildlife to be affected, especially in environmentally sensitive areas like ours.
Moss Landing in California, Vestra BESS in January 2025 is the perfect example of the improper planning and regulations in Battery Energy Storage Systems - which resulted in a fire which was unable to be extingished for days, and reignited within a few weeks.
Similarly BESS fires have occured in Bouldercombe Queensland, and The Geelong battery fires.
We cannot and will not compromise the beauty of our coastlines, catchments and water ways or the integrity of our Internationally protected RAMSAR wetlands - Towra Point Nature Reserve.
We ask those with the power to stop this proposed system to listen to our plea.
Rather than threatening our environment with further industrial developments, let us work together to restore, protect and preserve Kurnell, cherishing it as the nature reserve it can once again become.
Please, join us in saying 'No' to the proposed BESS projects & Industrial Precinct.
