The Issue

As individuals residing in the UK and users of various vehicles, we are profoundly disturbed by the recent proposals put forward by Keir Starmer and his government. The proposed changes to the tax bands for vehicles, introducing a 'pay-per-mile' system, represent a potential threat on multiple fronts. These new tax bands, combined with the planned fuel duty hikes in October, strike at the heart of hardworking caregivers, delivery drivers, and businesses across the UK. These changes threaten our right to privacy and freedom of movement, impacting all of us that rely on vehicles for business or personal use.

Critically, these changes will not just impact transport businesses, but will be deeply felt by average citizens who, whether for work or leisure, depend on their vehicles on a daily basis. The policy also raises serious privacy concerns, marking yet another unwelcome step towards a surveillance state. This is not just about taxes; this is about the erosion of our freedoms.

Road pricing, where drivers pay more Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) based on annual mileage and the pollution level of their vehicle, is indeed a contentious issue. This system essentially penalizes those who need to drive longer distances, often for work or essential travel, by increasing their tax burden.

Such a policy could disproportionately impact rural residents, who typically rely more on personal vehicles due to limited public transport options. Additionally, individuals with lower incomes might struggle more with the increased costs, leading to concerns about equity and fairness.

The implementation of this system could also face significant logistical challenges, including accurately tracking mileage and ensuring compliance. There's also the risk of incentivizing people to use older, more polluting vehicles for shorter distances, which could undermine environmental goals.

Overall, while the intent behind road pricing may be to reduce emissions and manage road use more effectively, it could be perceived as aggressive taxation, raising issues of fairness, accessibility, and practicality in its execution.

We argue that these proposed changes are not in the interests of the UK public, nor in the interests of the UK business sector. We appeal for a reconsideration of these proposed changes, for the good of all of us who rely on our vehicles for our livelihoods, our loved ones, and our freedom.
