Dear Supporters
Having reported the good news yesterday that Twane was taken off the deportation flight to Jamaica, imagine our shock to get a call from Twane in the early hours of the morning telling us he is on a bus with others being transported to an unknown airport to be deported despite having a high court injunction.
We have had a legal team working through the night and Twane was driven to Birmingham Airport, put on the plane, seated between two security guards, handcuffed to them both ready for take-off when he was approached and taken off the plane and is now being transferred back to Colnbrook Immigration Removal Centre.
This has been an unbelievably stressful night for Twane, his family and all of us. Twane should not have had to go through this.
Earlier in the night we received the news that a young 22 year old man with PTSD had tried to slit his wrists in his cell while security guards watched on. Emergency Services were called by dialling 999 but they refused to go.
He was subsequently restrained when he threatened to cut his own throat & instead of taking him to hospital he was transported to Birmingham airport to be deported. We worked with the Jamaican High Commissioner to raise concerns. He was subsequently granted asylum and returned to detention.
The treatment of Twane & this young man alone demonstrates why such charter flights should not be happening.
Our thoughts are with the approx 35 people deported on the flight due to depart at 7.30am and we continue the campaign for Twane, to stop any threat of deportation, for his release from detention and for British citizenship.
We will update you again in due course.
