Stop the Daylight Saving Time Change in Texas

The Issue

Twice a year, Texans and most of the other States join with approximately 76 countries around the world and practice Daylight Saving Time (DST) change. We would like to stop this practice and remain on one time all year long. US Founding father Benjamin Franklin suggested, rather jokingly, to wake up earlier to save candles. The primary goal of Daylight Saving Time is to conserve energy but whether DST actually saves energy is unclear. On the other hand there are many  studies that biennial time change has plenty of unintended consequences and detrimental effects on health and work efficiency. Multiple evidence links disruption of circadian clock related to biennial time change to a significant increase in road accidents, work-related injuries and deaths. Studies also show a significant increase in heart attacks and depression during the weeks following the time change. Many countries have banned the time change as inefficient and detrimental to their workforce. I personally have never met anyone who was looking forward to the time change. People either hate it or do not care about it. It especially affects those who have to wake up early to commute or work shifts.  Moving the hours around twice a year is a complex matter. Although it was originally brought forward as a way to conserve energy and that remains its primary purpose to this day, there is in fact no consistent evidence to show it is helping us. There is on the other hand, plenty of evidence to show that constantly shifting back and forth does harm. Major disasters such as the Exxon Valdez, the Challenger Explosion and the nuclear accident at Chernobyl are all linked to sleep deprivation. The costs of sleep-related accidents, as reported to the National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research in the U.S. was in excess of $56 billion and included more than 25,000 deaths and over 2.5 million serious injuries.  Moving clocks forward and backward every year in an ever increasing complex digital world is not without consequences either. Air traffic schedules, train schedules, public transport schedules all must be changed biennially. It complicates timekeeping, disrupts meetings and even livestock have been shown to have trouble adjusting to new routines. According to a Rasmussen Report from 2013, only 37% of Americans see the purpose of DST compared to 45% the year before. Please join me in making a step forward, one State at a time, and banning this outdated tradition in the progressive State of Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Obama: making this change and eliminating biennial time change on the National level will forever capture your contribution in history as the President who cared for well-being of Americans. This is a change that is so easy to implement, and many future generations will thank you for it.
