Stop the Current Cycle Lane Proposals in Govan – Protect Our Streets and Community
The Issue
We, the residents of Govan, call on Glasgow City Council to halt the current cycle lane proposals under the "Connecting Greater Govan" project. While we support safer, sustainable transport, the current plans are not suitable for our neighbourhood and were developed without proper community input.
The proposed cycle lanes in Govan will significantly reduce already limited parking, increase congestion, and disrupt access to homes and local businesses — without clear benefit or meaningful consultation with the people who live and work here.
We are not opposed to cycling infrastructure in principle, but we believe this plan is being rushed through without genuine engagement, adequate alternatives, or a full understanding of the negative impact on our community.
In similar projects, such as the Connecting Woodside initiative in Glasgow's west end, residents reported the loss of approximately 20 parking spaces due to cycle lane construction. This led to significant challenges in finding parking near their homes, even with paid permits. The small section of cycle lanes on Byres Road took more than 2 years to complete and has resulted i more congestion. Recently, several small business owners there criticised the cycle lane project, saying it reduced parking, hurt customer access, and ignored local input — with some calling for the changes to be reversed.
We, the undersigned, demand that:
- Glasgow City Council pauses the current proposals for cycle lanes in Govan.
- A comprehensive, transparent consultation is held with residents, businesses, and community groups.
- Any new plans reflect the needs of all road users — including pedestrians, drivers, public transport users, and those with mobility issues.
- A full impact assessment is published before further development.
Govan deserves thoughtful, inclusive development — not one-size-fits-all solutions that divide and disrupt.
We call on Glasgow City Council to immediately suspend the current cycle lane proposals in Govan and commit to a full, transparent consultation process that genuinely involves the local community. It is your duty to ensure that infrastructure changes are inclusive, evidence-based, and in the best interest of all residents — not imposed without consent.
