Stop the culling of the brumbies
The issue
Horses have been a central part of my entire 34 years of life – they're not just animals to me, they're family. It absolutely breaks my heart to witness the culling of the brumbies in Australia. This is personal to me and many others because these free-roaming horses are a living symbol of our heritage and why should they be culled? Is it just because they can?
Brumbies have roamed freely in the Australian Alps for nearly two centuries, embodying the spirit and history of the wild. These majestic creatures have intrinsic beauty and grace, symbolizing freedom to many Australians and visitors from around the world. However, the government has continued to sanction their culling, claiming they cause damage to the natural habitats. While management of wildlife populations is important, there are more humane and ethical ways to achieve balance in our ecosystems.
Instead of resorting to culling, strategies such as fertility control, rehoming programs, and managed grazing should be prioritized. Several experts have backed these alternatives, highlighting them as effective means to manage the population without spilling blood. The National Parks and Wildlife Service should collaborate with equine experts, conservationists, and local communities to develop a comprehensive strategy focused on rehabilitation and preservation rather than destruction.
Reports suggest that brumby culling methods are not only inhumane but also lead to more harm than good in the long run. Shooting from helicopters is a terrifying and painful way to die for these animals, and often leaves them suffering before death. Such intolerable cruelty must be stopped.
To preserve our heritage and protect these noble animals, we must act now. It’s crucial we raise our voices against such practices and lobby for legislative changes that protect brumbies. These horses deserve to run free and to live without the fear of slaughter.
Please join me in advocating for a halt to the culling of brumbies. Sign this petition to demand action from the government - let's work together towards a more compassionate and informed approach to wildlife management. Your signature can be a step towards ensuring a balanced coexistence between humans and wild horses in Australia.
