There is no way to insure that the trash and waste water from these campers is not going to end up on our beaches and kill protected wildlife. Fort Ord boasts unique ecosystems, providing sanctuary to a variety of rare species of flora and fauna. Is it worth sacrificing our history and environment for a commercialized campground?
Fort Ord holds a special place in the hearts of many, including my own family. My grandfather proudly served in the military and played a part in defending our nation. He trained at Fort Ord, a historic military base in California, rich in stories of bravery and sacrifice. Many veterans, just like him, have memories tied to this land, memories of camaraderie, service, and dedication. Now, these memories are at risk of being overshadowed by the construction of the Fort Ord Dunes Campground.
The Fort Ord base is not merely a stretch of land; it is a sacred site that embodies a significant chapter of military history. Spanning over 28,000 acres, Fort Ord has been a pivotal training ground for soldiers from World War I through the Vietnam War. In recognition of its cultural and historical significance, it was declared a National Monument in 2012. Developing a campground on this land represents a profound disrespect to the memory of those who have served.
There are solutions that can satisfy both preservationists and developers. We propose halting the construction plans and opening a dialogue with local communities, veterans, historians, environmentalists, and governmental bodies to consider alternative uses of the land that honor its historic and ecological values while exploring other potential sites for camping facilities.
The people who served at Fort Ord gave more than just their time—some gave their lives—and in preserving this land, we preserve our collective history.
