Living in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, used to be about enjoying the simple things—like going for a walk or a jog and feeling free among the beautiful scenery. I feel uncomfortable every time I step outside, knowing that these cameras are tracking my every move. And I am not alone.

Flock cameras, designed to capture license plate images, are transforming residential areas into surveillance zones. While intended to enhance safety, these devices often lead to an erosion of privacy and a culture of constant monitoring. It’s not only a matter of discomfort, but it's about the growing breach of privacy rights that ought to be protected.

In Lancaster County, over a dozen flock cameras have been installed in various neighborhoods, creating a web of surveillance that can track the movement of cars, cyclists, and even pedestrians. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, such surveillance measures often do not significantly deter crime but rather infringe upon civil liberties. Furthermore, a study by the ACLU has highlighted the disproportionate impact these technologies have on marginalized communities, amplifying systemic biases and discrimination.

There’s a better way. Replacing invasive surveillance tactics with community-based initiatives can effectively enhance safety without compromising our privacy. Increasing neighborhood watch programs, investing in community policing, and fostering open communication between residents and local authorities are measures that empower communities instead of dividing them.
