Stop the $200 Million White House Ballroom Project

Stop the $200 Million White House Ballroom Project
The Issue
The White House belongs to the American people—not to any one president’s personal legacy.
President Trump’s plan to add a $200 million, 90,000-square-foot ballroom to the White House is an unnecessary and misguided project that sends the wrong message at the wrong time. While officials claim the money will come from private donors, the true cost goes far beyond dollars—it undermines the dignity of our most historic public building and diverts focus from real national needs.
At a time when millions of Americans are struggling to afford housing, food, and healthcare, a massive luxury construction project at the president’s residence feels like a slap in the face. Whether or not taxpayer dollars are directly involved, the project demands public resources for planning, security, and oversight—and raises serious questions about influence. Who are these unnamed “patriot donors,” and what might they expect in return?
Worse, this addition threatens the historical and architectural integrity of the White House. The East Wing, where the ballroom will be built, is more than just office space—it’s home to the first lady’s staff and the heart of public tours. Preservation experts have warned that the scale and speed of this renovation risk permanent damage to one of our nation’s most iconic landmarks. And because presidential changes to the White House are exempt from key historic preservation laws, there’s no binding review to stop it.
Every president leaves their mark on the White House. But those marks should honor the office—not remake it in gold.
We, the undersigned, urge members of Congress, preservation committees, and the American public to oppose this extravagant project. The White House is not a resort, a private venue, or a personal trophy—it is a symbol of democracy and service. Let’s treat it that way.
