The Issue

As a Teaching Assistant, I work hard every day to support children with their learning, wellbeing, and development. Like many key workers, I provide an essential service to my community, yet rising living costs mean that every pound makes a difference. Reducing or removing tax on Teaching Assistants and other key workers would recognise the vital role we play and help hardworking people keep more of the money they earn. We are there for others every day, and it is time for our contribution to be acknowledged.

Teaching Assistants, nurses, teachers, and other key workers in the UK are the backbone of our society. Despite our low pay, we are on the front lines, ensuring that classrooms are effective learning environments, hospitals run smoothly, and schools operate efficiently. However, with increased living costs, the burden of taxes becomes a heavier load to bear, affecting hundreds of thousands of dedicated workers across the nation.

The strain of taxation on low-paid key workers is immense. In 2022, the average salary for a Teaching Assistant was approximately £18,065, which is below the UK national average salary of around £31,000. Nurses, who are equally critical to public health, have average salaries of just over £25,000. With inflation hitting double digits last year, our salaries aren't stretching as far as they used to, leading more families to struggle with basic living costs.

A feasible solution is to either reduce or altogether abolish income tax for workers earning below the national average within essential services. Such a change would not only provide immediate financial relief to these workers but also act as a form of recognition for the invaluable services they provide. It would mean more money in their pockets, less financial stress, and an increased ability to provide for their families.

Moreover, recognizing the profound contributions of key workers through tax relief would have broader societal benefits. It could enhance job satisfaction, reduce turnover rates, and encourage more people to pursue careers in these essential but economically underappreciated roles.

The time to act is now. We call upon the UK government to take decisive steps in supporting those who support all of us daily. By providing tax relief for low-paid key workers, we can foster a society that truly values and supports its essential workers.

Please sign this petition and stand with us in asking for fair and necessary changes. Let us ensure that all key workers are valued and treated with the respect they deserve through meaningful financial policies.
