Stop Securly from invading students' privacy
The Issue
As a resident concerned for the privacy and security of our students in the Fort Mill School District, I am dismayed by the use of a monitoring software called Securly. This software not only invades the privacy of students but also allows unauthorized surveillance by teachers, leading to potential misuse.
My experiences highlight the disturbing implications of such software. I personally value my online data security, and witnessing Securly's intrusion into student privacy concerns me deeply. Despite my efforts to remove the information Securly has sold, I remain unable to eradicate all traces, leading to further anxiety over where and how my data is being used.
Data privacy rights are paramount, especially in educational settings. Securly's practices of selling student data without explicit consent violate both ethical standards and the trust parents and students place in educational institutions. Furthermore, the ability of teachers to monitor students around the clock, even if they are not enrolled in their class, further highlights a breach of privacy that cannot be tolerated.
According to studies, such practices can potentially lead to undesired consequences, such as data breaches or misuse of personal information. This unfettered access to personal data raises significant concerns about data protection and puts students at risk of being unfairly monitored or targeted.
We urge the Fort Mill School District to immediately cease the use of Securly monitoring software. Instead, implement alternative measures that ensure student safety without compromising their privacy. Robust solutions respecting privacy rights and ensuring that any data collected is handled with utmost care and transparency are essential.
Sign this petition to advocate for the privacy rights of our students and push for change within the Fort Mill School District. Let us work together to protect our children from unwarranted surveillance and ensure a safer, more private learning environment.
