Stop SB 4408 to Protect Chenango County State Land from Solar Farms

The Issue

Chenango County’s natural beauty and ecological integrity are at risk due to the proposed large-scale solar developments under SB 4408.

  • Our community depends on the rich ecosystems within our state lands—not only for their environmental value, but also for the economic stability they help sustain. These lands support diverse wildlife and critical habitats that maintain ecological balance. Large-scale solar installations in these areas could cause lasting disruption, fragmenting habitats and threatening local biodiversity. Once altered, these ecosystems may not recover.
  • Beyond ecology, there are real economic consequences. Chenango County draws hunters and outdoor enthusiasts each year. These visitors support small businesses—lodging, restaurants, and suppliers—and contribute meaningfully to the local economy. If access to and quality of these natural lands decline, so too could the livelihoods of our communities.
  • Renewable energy development is important, but it must be implemented responsibly. Projects should prioritize already developed or lower-impact sites—such as rooftops and parking lots—rather than cherished public lands. A balanced approach can support clean energy goals without sacrificing the landscapes, wildlife, and local economies that define Chenango County.
  • Those who live in the rural areas of Chenango County did not choose to build their homes and raise their families here expecting nearby state lands to be industrialized and destroyed.

Protect the land. Protect our economy. Oppose SB 4408!
