Stop sale of our public green space
The issue
For many decades, the residents and visitors to Culburra have cherished the open green space of Tilbury Cove Reserve that offers stunning views of Culburra Beach and the Illawarra escarpment. This land has been an integral part of our community life, serving as a place for celebratory picnics, sporting games, and peaceful gatherings with family and friends. It is a space where people connect with nature and each other, fostering a sense of community and well-being.
Unfortunately, this beloved patch of greenspace is under threat. A Development Application (DA) is currently in the process that, if approved, will allow the sale of a large section of the reserve under the Torrens Title. This will pave the way for private development, restricting access to a place that has long been open to everyone. Once gone, this precious piece of land will be lost, altering the character of Culburra and depriving future generations of the opportunities we have enjoyed.
The argument for development often centers around economic growth. However, such growth should not come at the expense of community welfare and environmental preservation. Public green spaces are invaluable; they contribute to ecological balance, provide recreational spaces, and enhance the livability of urban areas. These benefits are irreplaceable and must be prioritized over the short-term financial gains that development might bring.
To preserve our community's heritage and protect our environment, we urge the decision-makers to reject the Torrens Title DA. We ask you, the people who love and support Culburra, to join us in this fight. By coming together, we can present a unified voice that speaks louder than the interests of developers. Let's keep our public spaces public.
Sign this petition to save Culburra’s green space and sustain the legacy of community enjoyment and environmental stewardship it represents. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that this land remains a treasure for all to cherish.
