Stop removal of disabled blue badge parking by Glasgow City Council

Stop removal of disabled blue badge parking by Glasgow City Council

The Issue

Glasgow City Council have been removing substantial numbers of essential and well used parking spaces for the disabled.

For example; 7 spaces have been removed on Ingram Street and replaced with a taxi rank which I've yet to see a taxi use. Not long before 7 spaces were removed from the southern stub of Hanover Street. Replaced with 3 regular meter bays. I've also heard of removals in other parts of the city such as Cambridge street and the moving of spaces further away from common destinations e.g the spaces on the north side of George Square moved east to George Street beside the City Chambers. Add in the wholesale removal of regular spaces increasing pressure on the little room left, the car limiting avenues scheme, inset bays given yellow lines when they have no other purpose, and on top the unchecked misuse of blue badge bays, and you have an impossible situation for disabled visitors and workers.

In addition many of those blue badge bays were longer to accommodate ramps for wheelchair users who cannot use any of the remaining regular spaces.

The point of blue badges is to enable parking within the allowed qualifying walking limit. These spaces are now far exceeding that distance from most likely destinations.

There are few accessible alternatives. The subway is not at all, there is no non subway park and ride and many stations in the wider area are not accessible. Cycling and wheeling are not helpful if you live outwith the city. For many, transport by car is the only way to do anything.

Please help by signing this petition. Add your experiences if you can to let this council, and others, know what a serious impact this has on the lives of disabled people and tell them to stop the removal, reverse some of the changes of use and introduce a realistic plan for disabled people to live their daily lives. The current trend is downright cruel and regressive. I expect better from a party that should be caring for the more vulnerable people of Scotland.
