The Issue

It has become increasingly challenging for senior citizens in San Diego to enjoy recreational activities such as pickleball due to the reduced operating hours of our local recreational centers. Many seniors, like myself, rely on these centers not just for amusement but as essential hubs for physical exercise, socialization, and mental well-being. The game of pickleball isn't merely a leisure activity; it's a lifeline that helps us stay active and connected with our community.

San Diego's recreation centers have historically been places where people of all ages, especially seniors, come together to stay active and socialize. However, the recent cuts in operation hours threaten to undermine this community spirit. For many of us, these centers provide a vital outlet for physical activity that is both accessible and enjoyable. According to the National Institute on Aging, regular physical activity is crucial for healthy aging, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, managing stress levels, and improving overall quality of life.

Reducing the hours of operation will not only deprive us of these benefits but also fragment the strong sense of community that activities like pickleball nurture. For many, it is a social anchor that keeps isolation and loneliness at bay, which are significant concerns for the elderly population. A study by the National Institute on Aging suggests that adequate socialization can immensely improve cognitive function, emotional health, and even longevity.

We urge the San Diego City Council to recognize the importance of these centers and take immediate action to stop the reduction of hours. This change will safeguard the opportunities for seniors and other community members to engage in healthy, social activities. Your signature can make a difference in preserving our community's health and vibrancy. Please sign this petition to ensure San Diego's recreation centers remain a cornerstone of active and communal living for everyone.
