Stop Rachel Reeves from jeopardising classic vehicles
The Issue
As a passionate enthusiast and owner of classic vehicles and motorcycles, I have dedicated a significant part of my life to preserving and showcasing these timeless treasures. My involvement with the local transport museum as an active volunteer allows me to share this passion with countless others who admire and cherish our motoring heritage. However, recent proposals spearheaded by Rachel Reeves threaten to dismantle the very foundation of the classic vehicle community by abolishing important exemptions that keep our beloved cars on the road.
These exemptions are more than just legal privileges; they are the lifeline for numerous classic vehicle shows and events that draw communities together, boost local economies, and celebrate our shared history. Abolishing these exemptions would not only make it financially unviable for many of us to maintain our collections, but it would also erode a vibrant part of our cultural tapestry in the UK.
Statistics from the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs illustrate that the historic vehicle sector contributes approximately £7.2 billion annually to the UK economy and supports over 34,000 jobs. By targeting this sector with new regulations, policymakers risk rendering countless vehicles obsolete and devaluing a thriving part of our heritage.
Instead of imposing detrimental restrictions, we propose a dialogue between policymakers and stakeholders from the classic vehicle community to develop a balanced approach that respects environmental concerns while still preserving the rich history these vehicles represent. A potential alternative could be the introduction of incentives for eco-friendly retrofitting of classic vehicles, allowing enthusiasts to reduce emissions without losing authenticity.
Join us in urging Rachel Reeves to reconsider these proposals and engage with the classic vehicle community to find solutions that honour both our historic legacy and environmental responsibilities. Together, we can ensure the continued enjoyment and appreciation of classic vehicles for generations to come.
Please sign this petition to support the classic vehicle community and safeguard an important part of our cultural heritage.
