Stop queensland approving fracking for the Taroom Trough oil expansion
The issue
Tumubra, known as Deni Casey, an independent representative of the Ghungabula people, I stand as a sovereign custodian of our ancestral lands and waters in Central Queensland. For me, the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) is not just an underground water source but my lifeblood, my ancestor, and the very essence of my identity and culture. Our connection to these waters is ancient and unbroken, a sacred trust passed down through countless generations. Water is not a resource to be exploited; it is living.
Currently, the Queensland government is considering allowing fracking in the Taroom Trough for oil expansion. This decision threatens not only our cultural heritage and ancestral ties but also the sustainability of our environment. Fracking poses significant risks, including groundwater contamination, air pollution, and seismic activity. Studies have shown that chemicals used in the fracking process can infiltrate drinking water and adversely affect human health and ecosystems.
The Great Artesian Basin is one of the largest underground water reservoirs in the world, and it is crucial for both the environment and the Indigenous communities who depend on it. Disrupting this vital water source to pursue short-term economic gain through fracking is not only irresponsible but morally and ethically questionable.
We must protect the Great Artesian Basin from exploitation. By putting a stop to fracking in the Taroom Trough, we take a stand for conserving our environment, supporting Indigenous sovereignty, and safeguarding our future. Let's prioritize renewable energy solutions that do not compromise our natural resources and respect the ancestral lands of Indigenous Australians.
Please stand with us in this fight to protect our sacred waters and cultural heritage. Sign this petition to stop Queensland from approving fracking for the Taroom Trough oil expansion. Together, we can make a difference and ensure the preservation of our environment for generations to come.
