Stop publicly sharing last name and age in DUPR profiles for amateur pickleball players

The Issue

We, the undersigned members of the pickleball community, respectfully request that DUPR remove the public display of last names and ages from player profiles. While we appreciate DUPR's commitment to fostering a competitive environment, displaying such personal information without user consent raises significant privacy concerns.

Alignment with Privacy Best Practices

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) empowers individuals with greater control over their personal information, emphasizing the importance of user consent and data minimization. By following the principles set forth in the CCPA, DUPR can enhance user trust and privacy.

Furthermore, organizations such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) advocate for minimizing the collection and exposure of Personally Identifiable Information (PII), including full names and ages, to reduce privacy risks.

Privacy and Safety Concerns

Many of us are amateur players who value our privacy. Publicly displaying full names and ages can lead to unwanted attention, potential stalking, and age-based discrimination. By limiting the visibility of such information, DUPR can create a safer and more inclusive environment for all players.

Requested Actions

To align with privacy best practices and protect user information, we request that DUPR:

  • Display only first names or allow users to choose a preferred display name (e.g., initials or username).
  • Make age visibility optional, allowing players to control the disclosure of their age.
  • Enhance privacy settings to give users more control over what personal information is shared publicly.
  • Implementing these changes will demonstrate DUPR's commitment to user privacy and adherence to established privacy standards.

Last Name Risks: A full last name makes it easy to find a person's home address, workplace, social media profiles, and personal associations through a simple online search, increasing the risk of stalking, harassment, and unwanted contact.

Age Risks: Publicly displaying age can lead to age discrimination in employment opportunities if employers or recruiters come across this information. Additionally, age details can help bad actors piece together a person’s birthdate, increasing the risk of identity theft and fraud.

We ask DUPR to make these changes as soon as possible to ensure compliance with privacy best practices and protect the personal information of all users.

Implementing these changes will demonstrate DUPR's commitment to user privacy and adherence to established privacy standards. By doing so, DUPR will help create a safer and more inclusive environment for all players while respecting individual privacy rights.

Thank you for your consideration, and we hope to see these important updates implemented.
