The Issue

Our quiet neighborhood in Forest Park cherishes Triangle Park not just as an open space, but as a lush, natural sanctuary where children laugh, play, and explore. As parents, nature enthusiasts, and dedicated members of this community, we take our children to the park nearly every day, relishing its vibrant trees and unique ecosystem. Triangle Park is more than just a playground—it's a testimony to the beauty of unspoiled nature and a crown jewel of our locality, offering fresh air, abundant shade, and green open space for everyone to enjoy.

The proposed changes to Triangle Park threaten to destroy the essential character of this beloved place. Plans to cut down most of the trees, replace natural elements with toxic artificial turf, and install concrete and synthetic playground surfaces risk transforming our peaceful haven into an uninviting landscape reminiscent of urban commercial areas. Moreover, the suggested construction of a pavilion and large play structures raise concerns about attracting large crowds and disrupting the serenity we currently treasure. Not only is there already no parking for the park, adding these additional structures will increase traffic congestion on our narrow historic roads.

As numerous studies have shown, artificial turf and synthetic playground materials pose health risks to children due to the chemicals they release, as well as long term adverse ecological effects that are hard to recover from, including soil degradation and increased surface temperatures. Meanwhile, our park's flourishing trees sustain biodiversity and contribute positively to air quality, offering both ecological and community benefits. In addition, the shade of our current park differentiates it from the city's other parks, creating a much needed respite in the hot Alabama summer.

Before we allow these disruptive plans to proceed, it's crucial to consult the community. Strategies such as enhancing existing pathways, adding play facilities that work with the current trees, and keeping elements of the proposal such as new fencing and added crosswalks could bolster the park’s appeal without losing its natural charm.

Join us in expressing concerns about this redevelopment project, and rather than removing our green spaces, let’s work together to improve Triangle Park in harmony with nature and the historic character of our neighborhood. Please sign this petition to express our collective desire to preserve the natural beauty of Triangle Park for future generations, ensuring we continue to foster a healthy environment where our children can play and families can thrive together, while maintaining the historic natural charm of our beloved park.
