We were told inflation was cooling off—and it is. But at the grocery store, it sure doesn’t feel that way. Food prices are still climbing, and for many families, the weekly grocery bill is becoming impossible to manage.

While the Consumer Price Index shows inflation is easing across the economy, food costs have not followed suit. Prices for essentials like cereal, produce, and baked goods continue to rise, even as transportation and supply chain pressures fall. What gives? 

It’s time for state and federal regulators to step in. We’re calling on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and relevant state attorneys general to investigate potential price gouging and unfair pricing practices in the grocery industry. If corporations are using inflation as cover to boost profits while families struggle to put food on the table, we deserve to know.

Groceries aren’t a luxury. We all need to eat. We urge our leaders to protect consumers from being taken advantage of and to ensure transparency and fairness in food pricing.
