The Issue

Every Motzei Shabbat and Yom Tov, it’s become commonplace to see a flood of advertisements filling up WhatsApp statuses. While some might find the influx of messages useful, many in our community find it overwhelming and frustrating, making them feel crazy and overwhelmed.

Shabbat and Yom Tov are significant times for rest, reflection, and spiritual growth. After these precious hours, bombarding people with consumerist messages detracts from the peace and mindfulness we've just gained. It's disheartening for those of us who cherish this tranquility to face a barrage of ads when we switch on our phones.

Not only is the timing inappropriate, but the practice also often clutters digital spaces meant for community and connection. It drowns personal and meaningful content in a sea of commercial clutter, diluting the essence of why many of us are on WhatsApp in the first place — to connect with family and friends.

To create a balance between maintaining community spaces and respecting the tranquility after Shabbat and Yom Tov, we propose establishing a community guideline to limit the posting of advertisements during these times. This guideline will respect individual freedom while fostering a more considerate communal environment.

We call upon everyone in our community to respect this guideline and to refrain from posting ads on WhatsApp statuses immediately following Shabbat and Yom Tov. By adopting this practice, we can help maintain the peace and mindfulness we earn each week and share more meaningful content with our loved ones.

Join us in this initiative to respect our community's spiritual and mental well-being. Please sign this petition and support a more thoughtful digital space for all.
