The Problem: Why New Brunswick's 'Cell Phone Ban' (Policy 311) Harms Students and ParentsAs of February 1, 2027, the New Brunswick Department of Education and Early Childhood Development will implement a full-day 'bell-to-bell' cell phone ban for all high school students as part of Policy 311. Although classroom distraction is certainly a concern, such a draconian policy involving non-instructional times such as lunch and recess causes significant harm that cannot be ignored.We ask the provincial government and school districts to modify the current policy to allow high school students to have access to their cell phones during non-instructional times.Hear the following reasons as to why the current policy is a mistake and why you should sign the petition now:Ineffective and Unnecessary Compromise of Students' Safety: With increasing rates of school emergencies, weather disasters, and family problems, students and parents have a right to communicate directly without any barriers. Making parents call the school office and get their message conveyed creates unnecessary delays.Unequal Treatment of Responsible Students: Most high school students are responsible in how they use their technological devices. This policy puts all students under one umbrella for the actions of a few who are irresponsible in using technology. Taking away the right to use these devices is a punishment for responsible students.Inability to Prepare Students for Life Outside School: High school age is when students need to learn how to control themselves in using the technology in order to succeed later in their university and work environments. Removing the technology altogether doesn't make students learn about managing distractions.Negative Consequences for Students' Well-being and Accessibility: For some students (those dealing with anxiety, neurodivergent, sensory processing disorder), having a phone to listen to music, use a personal planner or other applications becomes a necessary coping tool for those stressful lunch hours and hallway transitions.Needless Hassle in Transactions: Many high school students use digital wallets and tap-to-pay technologies to purchase food in school or surrounding cafes during lunch. Having no access to their phones makes these transactions unnecessary difficult.Teacher Overkill Enforcement: This policy makes teachers enforce the rules of what essentially should be left up to students to decide. Teachers spend much more time searching lockers, confiscating and arguing about confiscated devices which creates a bad rapport with students.
