Stop Parking Fees for Portobello Residents

The Issue

Living in Portobello is a joy, with its beautiful beachfront and vibrant community. However, as a resident, I am frustrated by the new parking restrictions and imposed fees. These measures feel like an unfair burden on the people who call this unique Edinburgh neighborhood home. As popularity for Portobello grows, with more visitors flocking to enjoy the scenic beauty and charming locales, the City Council's decision to enforce paid parking seems more like an attempt to capitalize on this influx rather than fostering a supportive environment for its residents.

Local residents should not be forced to pay for parking on streets they live on. Many of us chose to make Portobello our home for its sense of community and rapport with our surroundings, not to be treated merely as another source of revenue. While efforts to manage increased traffic and maintain order are understandable, penalizing residents with parking fees is not the solution.

By implementing parking fees, the council risks altering the character of Portobello, potentially discouraging local engagement and displacing those who have contributed to making it the beloved area it is today. Rather than resorting to quick financial fixes, we urge the council to explore alternative strategies that responsibly manage visitor numbers while respecting the needs and rights of residents.

We suggest measures such as improving public transportation options and creating designated visitor parking areas that do not infringe on resident spaces. Ensuring that residents can enjoy the freedom and accessibility of their own streets without added financial strain must be a priority.

This change is crucial for maintaining the spirit and essence of Portobello, where residents can thrive without undue financial burdens. Join us in requesting the Edinburgh City Council to roll back these parking restrictions and fees for local residents. Please sign this petition to protect our community's integrity and quality of life.
