The Issue

Children, like many others at Newfield Secondary School, have been wearing black polo shirts as part of their uniform. This uniform has been practical, comfortable, and affordable. However, the recent decision by the headteacher to change the uniform to white shirts with ties presents numerous challenges for parents and students alike.

Firstly, white shirts are notorious for showing stains. School is a place where children are actively involved in various activities—lunch times, art classes, and sports activities to name a few. A white shirt will inevitably accumulate stains quickly, requiring frequent washing and replacement, which can put a financial strain on families, particularly those with multiple children.

Additionally, many parents have voiced concerns about the impractical design of the white shirts. They start to gap around the chest area and when done up with collars and ties, it becomes uncomfortable and increases heat, which is not suitable for all-day wear. This can distract students from focusing on their studies and may affect their performance.

Another issue is that white shirts are often see-through, making undergarments such as bras visible, which can be embarrassing for students and not conducive to a respectful learning environment.

Furthermore, these uniform changes come with increased costs. Some families in our community are already struggling to afford the current uniform, and adding the pressure of purchasing more expensive clothing items makes it difficult for them to make ends meet. How can we justify a change that causes such financial strain?

We urge Newfield Secondary School to reconsider this change, keeping the needs of students and their families in mind. Instead of focusing on a more formal look, we should prioritize the comfort, practicality, and inclusivity of all students to ensure they have a supportive educational experience.

Please sign this petition to stop the unnecessary change in the uniform from black polo shirts to white shirts with ties. Let's make sure our school's decisions are in the best interest of its students and their families.
