The Issue

For over a decade, The Kapil Sharma Show has remained on air across multiple platforms, amassing massive popularity — but at a cost that its audience rarely questioned. The show has consistently used cross-dressing characters as props for cheap, humiliating comedy. These characters are portrayed as greedy, lustful, foolish, and grotesque — then mocked, laughed at, and mistreated on screen.

This is not harmless fun. This is a weekly broadcast message to crores of viewers that trans and gender-diverse people are acceptable targets for ridicule and contempt.

The show has aired on multiple major platforms — Colors TV, Sony, and now Netflix — giving it enormous reach and influence. Yet neither the creators, nor the platforms, have been held accountable for the harm this content causes to real people.

This matters even more today. The Anti-Trans Amendment Act 2026 has stripped transgender people of the right to self-determination and introduced humiliating bureaucratic processes to have one's gender recognised. In this climate, media that normalises mockery of trans people is not just irresponsible — it is dangerous. It shapes the attitudes of lawmakers, employers, families, and communities.

We call on:

Kapil Sharma, Kiku Sharda, Krishna Abhishek, Sunil Grover, Archana Puran Singh, Navjot Singh Sidhu, and all regular cast members to publicly acknowledge and apologise for this pattern of content, and stop it immediately.

Netflix India, Colors TV, and Sony Entertainment to remove or demonetise episodes featuring this content, issue a public apology, and commit to trans-inclusive content guidelines.

All platforms that have carried this show to issue a public statement on representation standards and cease airing such content without delay.

Trans lives are not a punchline. They are not a costume, not a prop, not a cheap laugh before the ad break. Every time this show airs, it tells a trans child somewhere in this country that they are an object of ridicule. That child deserves better.
