Stop Misleading Canadian Product labels - Shopping Canadian should be easier, not harder.

The Issue

Canadians deserve transparency.
No more deceptive labeling.

In Canada, we take pride in supporting our local businesses, farmers, and manufacturers. But right now, Canadians are being misled by deceptive product labeling—and it needs to stop.

Companies are exploiting loopholes in labeling laws, making it difficult for consumers to know where their products actually come from. Many of us have seen “Product of Canada” signs at grocery stores, only to check the actual label and find “Product of USA” instead. Some stores are even covering country-of-origin labels with stickers to obscure the truth. This is false advertising, and it’s unfair to both consumers and Canadian businesses.

🚨 Recent Examples of Labeling Deception:

• Giant Tiger in London, Ontario: An end cap in the produce section was labeled “Product of Canada,” but the actual bags of produce displayed were labeled “Product of USA.” (Photo evidence available.)
 • Walmart in Woodbridge, Vaughan: Reports indicate that this location has been placing stickers over country-of-origin labels, obscuring the true origin of products and misleading consumers.
 • Nationwide Issues: Many products are labeled “Trademarked by [Canadian Company]”, making consumers believe they are purchasing Canadian-made goods—when in reality, these products are imported from other countries with no clear disclosure.

🔍 What These Labels Actually Mean:

Many Canadians assume that “Made in Canada” or “Product of Canada” means a product is fully sourced and manufactured within the country. But there are loopholes. Here’s what these common labels really mean:

✅ “Product of Canada”
✔️ At least 98% of the total direct costs (ingredients, labor, production) must be from Canada.
✔️ Must be processed in Canada.
✔️ This is the most reliable indicator that a product is truly Canadian.

✅ “Made in Canada”
✔️ At least 51% of the total direct costs must come from Canada.
✔️ Final processing must occur in Canada.
✔️ Must specify if ingredients are imported (e.g., “Made in Canada with imported ingredients”).

⚠️ “Packaged in Canada”
🔸 This ONLY means the product was put into its packaging in Canada—it does not guarantee Canadian ingredients or production.

⚠️ “Imported by [Company Name]”
🔸 This does NOT mean the product is Canadian—it only means a Canadian company handled the import and distribution.

⚠️ “Trademarked by [Canadian Company]”
🔸 This is one of the most misleading labels—it simply means that a Canadian company owns the brand name but does NOT indicate where the product was actually made.

📢 We Demand Change. We Demand Transparency.

We are calling on the Canadian government and regulatory agencies to enforce stricter, clearer labeling laws to prevent deceptive practices and protect Canadian consumers. This includes:

✅ Mandatory country-of-origin labeling on all products, including those “trademarked by” Canadian companies.
✅ Stronger enforcement against misleading in-store signage and sticker cover-ups.
✅ Stricter penalties for corporations that attempt to deceive consumers.
✅ Regular audits and enforcement efforts to ensure compliance.
