Stop McDonald's from being built on the Pioneer River.

The issue

Marian deserves thoughtful growth that protects what makes our community special. The proposed 24-hour McDonald's would be built on the banks of the Pioneer River, replacing valuable riverfront with a large commercial development, increased traffic, lighting and activity. We support growth—but not at the expense of one of Marian's most treasured natural spaces.

The Pioneer River is more than just a waterway; it's part of Marian's identity. It provides a peaceful setting for residents and visitors to enjoy and contributes to the unique character of our town. Developing this site for a large commercial business would permanently change the riverfront and could impact the surrounding environment, while bringing increased traffic, noise and light to the area.

We believe Marian can continue to grow and thrive while protecting the places that make it special. This proposal isn't about whether McDonald's should come to Marian—it's about where it should be located. There are more appropriate sites that can support business growth without sacrificing our riverfront.

By signing this petition, you're asking McDonald's and Mackay Regional Council to reconsider this location and choose a site that better reflects the long-term interests of our community. Together, we can support sensible development, protect the Pioneer River, and help preserve Marian's unique character for future generations.

If this riverfront site isn't developed as a McDonald's, imagine what it could become instead—a vibrant community space with landscaped parklands, picnic areas, walking paths, playgrounds, public art or a riverside café. Opportunities like this are rare. Let's ensure this special location is used in a way that brings lasting value to the whole community, not just for today, but for generations to come.
