As a frequent user of TikTok, I am deeply disturbed by Margaret "Maggie" Foster's exploitation of the platform to fund her lifestyle. Foster, a user of public assistance including SSI, food stamps, and public housing is concurrently generating significant income by encouraging charity from unsuspecting TikTok users for superfluous activities like bingo and concerts. This is not only ethically questionable, but it broadens the impact of her exploitation to more than just the systems in place to support those in need.

As a matter of principle and to ensure the integrity of the platform, TikTok should intervene in such cases. Currently, TikTok has more than 1 Billion active monthly users (BBC News, 2021). A failure to address situations like these creates a dangerous precedent, sending a message that it is acceptable to take advantage of the goodwill of users and manipulate the platform for personal gain. This further jeopardizes the trust we have in TikTok and reduces the help available to those who genuinely need it.

Therefore, we are urging TikTok and their parent company, ByteDance, to make necessary policy adjustments and take swift action against users like Margaret “Maggie” Foster who misuse the platform in this way.
