The Issue

Several years ago, excessively loud vehicles began appearing in Metro Atlanta neighborhoods, but Atlanta is not alone. This phenomenon is global and now it is has grown throughout the state of Georgia as well.

The Georgia Loud Vehicles in Georgia Task Force is working to stop drivers of loud vehicles (cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATV-4 wheelers, go carts, mopeds, etc.) – with modified mufflers, unrepaired mufflers, drivers purposefully revving their engine, drivers playing loud music, PA systems or horns, etc. Many of these loud vehicles are also breaking speed limit and safe driving laws. Loud motorcycle drivers often do wheelies down the middle of the road and in the opposite lanes. Many violate the law by performing drifting circles in intersections burning rubber, endangering pedestrians, retail business, and other vehicle drivers.

Georgia citizens have a right to live without noise pollution while walking in their neighborhoods, sleeping in their homes, and working in their places of work. Many citizens work from home, so this is twice as offensive to them. Even phone conversations are interrupted by loud vehicles. This toxic element adversely affects the quality of life, and public health in the state of Georgia. It is exhausting to live with and the lack of sleep makes it more miserable.

Families with small children must cope with their children’s crying from being scared and woken up by loud vehicles. Then parents must try to get them back to sleep. Even when they finally get their child asleep another loud vehicle wakes them up again. Most parents would do anything to avoid this.

Noise pollution is bad for public health. Noise pollution negatively increases stress which increases high blood pressure, causes hearing loss as well as tinnitus. It can cause strokes along with heart attacks and it has a negative impact on other health concerns.

Loud vehicles also mute paramedics and fire engines in route to emergencies. Sitting in traffic with the sound of these loud vehicles prevents other drivers from hearing emergency vehicles approaching and slows the EMS to their destinations.

Loud vehicles are motivating citizens to move to quieter areas, even out of state. Live through being woken up in the middle of the night countless times and you are going to change your mind about the place in which you live if the Georgia State Legislature won’t pass laws or help to make your place of living livable!

Law enforcement cannot enforce existing Georgia Code due to inadequate staffing, speed of vehicles violating the law, time to respond to violation to enforce the law as vehicles have left the area. Police are also concerned with confrontation. Frequently when law enforcement stops a vehicle for something such as a modified muffler, loud radios, etc. it can easily become confrontational.

Georgia citizens are increasingly agitated by the continued toxic condition and want action.

Technology is available now and is being used in many cities to identify loud vehicles without law enforcement onsite involvement. Noise Detection Technology with microphones and nose decibel detection are now used in the US and Europe. These microphones record noise decibel levels, and the technology identifies the vehicle as it passes by this equipment.

The Georgia State Legislature must pass legislation this coming session. If this doesn’t pass in the 2024 legislature, we must start over after the next election as there will be new legislators to be educated on how bad this is and new bills introduced.

We must change the law with legislation. We need your support to do that, NOW.

Please sign this petition to tell Georgia legislators to make this happen in the 2024 session. Adding your zip code or city will tell YOUR legislators it is important to you! NO MORE DELAYS. IT NEEDS TO HAPPEN NOW!
