The issue

As a disabled veteran, I rely heavily on the Maryborough Aquatic Centre's heated indoor pool for my regular hydrotherapy sessions. These sessions are not just a routine for me, but a vital part of my rehabilitation and pain management strategy. However, recent proposals to restrict public access to this essential facility, limiting it to very specific times, greatly jeopardises my ability to receive regular and effective treatment. This is incredibly concerning, not just for me, but for many others who use the pool for similar therapeutic needs.

Hydrotherapy is recognised as a beneficial treatment for various physical and mental health conditions, providing pain relief and improving mobility and strength. According to the latest studies, water-based exercise can significantly reduce disability levels in individuals suffering from heart disease, arthritis, and other chronic conditions. The heated pool environment provides an ideal setting for these exercises, especially for those who suffer from joint and muscle pain.

Unfortunately, the proposed scheduling severely limits the availability of the pool to the public, thereby obstructing the therapy of numerous individuals, including myself and my physiotherapist who cannot attend during the new times. This reduction in accessibility discriminates against those who cannot fit their essential therapy sessions within these restricted time slots, thus depriving them of their right to health management and quality of life.

The Maryborough community and its surrounding areas highly value this facility not only for therapeutic purposes but also for leisure and social interaction. Restricting access would mean a significant detriment to the local citizens, particularly the elderly, disabled, and those in need of regular exercise to maintain their health.

I urge Fraser Coast Regional Council to reconsider this decision and maintain current access levels to the heated indoor pool. By doing so, you will continue to support the well-being of all individuals who rely on this vital community asset. (Note: A suggested alternative could be to install a removable marquee over the outside 25m pool for school use during winter.)

Please join me in signing this petition to ensure that our community's health resources remain available and accessible to all who need them. Your support can make a difference in keeping this necessary facility open to all, at convenient times for everyone.
