Stop Legislature from Illegally Stripping Ohio Teachers of Their Pension Voting Rights

The Issue

The Issue:

We are dedicated Ohio teachers, and as dedicated educators in Ohio, we are deeply concerned about the recent legislation that threatens to strip teachers of their voting rights on the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) board, leading to less oversight, and less consideration of the needs and wants of educators across the State of Ohio.

The way in which this measure was implemented was a power grab over a $96 billion dollar pension fund. At 1am on Wednesday June 25, 2025 language was inserted into the State budget bill to reduce the number of elected teacher seats on the STRS board from seven (7) to three (3), replacing these elected seats with government appointed members.  There were 12 HOURS between the language being inserted and the legislature's vote. Teachers didn't even get a public hearing let alone even a day to protest this measure. Lawmakers didn't have any time to vet the new laws being placed.

The board, which oversees our retirement funds, plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency and accountability. By replacing elected teacher representatives with appointed individuals, the unique needs and voices of active and retired educators are at risk of being overlooked. Our collective ability to influence decisions that directly affect our futures would be severely compromised.

According to the National Education Association, similar measures in other states have led to reduced teacher input and satisfaction with benefit plans. Ohio teachers deserve a fair representation on the board that manages their retirement security.

The current democratic system allows us, the educators, to elect board members who understand our challenges and priorities. Stripping these rights not only diminishes our voices but also undermines the integrity of the entire system that has been built on educator participation, trust, and democratic values.

I urge Governor DeWine to reverse this action. Let's ensure that those who are most impacted by the decisions of the board have a direct voice in how their retirement is managed.

SB 69 was opened to address all of the five Ohio pensions months ago. There is currently no language written. It would be more appropriate to address this issue in SB 69 than in a state budget bill in the 11th hour.

Please sign this petition to stand with Ohio teachers. Your support will make a difference in safeguarding the democratic process and protecting the interests of current and future educators across the state. Together, we can ensure that our voices continue to remain a pivotal part of our retirement system.
