Stop Labour Party from Imposing VAT on Private Education

The Issue

As a working-class single parent responsible for the entirety of my children's education fees, I work tirelessly and make significant sacrifices to provide them with the best possible education through private schooling. I am deeply concerned about the Labour Party's proposal to impose VAT on private school fees if they win the election. This policy would place an additional financial burden on families like mine, who are already stretching their budgets to invest in their children's futures.

According to a report by The Independent Schools Council (ISC), approximately 7% of UK children attend private schools, and many of these families are not wealthy but make considerable sacrifices for their children’s education. Imposing VAT could force many parents to reconsider this option, potentially leading to overcrowded state schools and reduced educational opportunities for all students. This also impacts state schools who will see a sudden increase in demand

We urge the Labour Party to reconsider this detrimental policy change. The implementation of VAT on private school fees will exacerbate social inequality, polarising wealth, privilege, and opportunity. Wealthy families will still afford to send their children to independent schools, maintaining their access to high-quality education. In contrast, middle-class and working-class families, who already make significant sacrifices, will be denied this opportunity. The gap between the privileged and the rest of society will only widen, fostering greater inequality.

Moreover, private school fees should not be taxed; instead, they should be tax-deductible for UK residents. Private schools save the state school system the cost of educating every child who attends a private institution. By making private school fees tax-deductible, we would recognise the financial relief provided to the public education system and encourage more families to continue supporting private education without additional financial strain.

The proposed policy will also place a considerable strain on public education. As more families are priced out of private schools, hundreds of additional children will flood the government education system. This influx will increase the financial burden on taxpayers and strain the already limited resources of public schools. The quality of education is likely to decline as schools struggle to accommodate the sudden rise in student numbers without a commensurate increase in funding or infrastructure.

Current students in the government sector will also suffer from this policy. Larger class sizes, overworked teachers, and stretched resources will compromise the learning environment, disadvantaging those who are already reliant on public education. The unintended consequence of this policy will be a general decline in education standards, affecting all children, regardless of their background.

In conclusion, the proposed VAT policy on private schools is poised to be a disaster. It will exacerbate social inequality, burden the taxpayer, and degrade the quality of public education. Instead of imposing a tax, private school fees should be made tax-deductible, recognising the financial relief they provide to the state system. As a parent deeply invested in my children's future and the future of our community, I urge you to reconsider and oppose this policy. We need solutions that bridge educational disparities and foster inclusive growth, not policies that deepen the divide and undermine our collective progress.

Additionally, I encourage all parents who make sacrifices to educate their children to apply for state school places, regardless of their intent to actually transfer their children. This action will demonstrate to the government how overwhelmed the state education system will become should they pursue this plan.

Please sign this petition to urge the Labour Party to reconsider this policy...or be cautious when voting for Labour Party. Everyone is due a rude awakening. Thank you for your support.
