Stop KOSA: Protect Free Speech, Privacy, and Digital Freedom

The Issue

The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) claims to protect children online — but in reality, it would give the government broad power to pressure websites into restricting content, censoring speech, limiting access to information, and implementing invasive age-verification systems. Similar laws in the UK and EU have already led to censorship, platform penalties, and online restrictions. Parents should guide and protect their children — NOT federal agencies, political appointees, or state Attorneys General. Tell Congress to reject KOSA and defend the First Amendment.

What KOSA Does — and Why It’s Dangerous

KOSA requires online platforms to comply with a vague and expansive “duty of care” to prevent content that could cause a wide range of emotional or psychological harms. While protecting children is an important goal, the bill’s language is so broad and unclear that it incentivizes platforms to censor massive amounts of lawful content just to avoid lawsuits or regulatory action.

Under KOSA, platforms may be forced to:

  • Algorithmically suppress or remove content on sensitive topics, even when beneficial
  • Disable features or limit recommendations based on subjective definitions of “harm”
  • Enforce intrusive age-verification, undermining privacy and anonymous speech
  • Over-police or remove lawful expression to avoid penalties

This law would not simply regulate platform behavior — it would effectively place the government in a position to influence what content Americans can see, share, or discuss. This is incompatible with the First Amendment.

We Have Seen This Before — Abroad

Other countries have passed similar “online safety” laws, and the results are alarming:

  • The UK’s Online Safety Act has increased censorship pressure on platforms and restricted the availability of lawful content.
  • The EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) has enabled regulatory crackdowns, including enormous fines against platforms like X/Twitter, creating strong incentives for over-moderation.

These laws were sold as “child protection” — but they led to sweeping censorship frameworks. KOSA is on the same path.

Children Need Protection — But Not Government Censorship

No one disputes that young people deserve safety online. But KOSA shifts responsibility away from families and hands it to federal and state governments — a solution that risks harming everyone’s rights.

Parents, not bureaucrats, should guide children’s digital lives. Education, parental involvement, digital literacy, and balanced parenting tools are the real solutions — not government-mandated censorship.

What We Demand

We call on Congress to:

  1. Reject the Kids Online Safety Act in its current or future form
  2. Protect free speech, free expression, and access to information online
  3. Reject mandatory age-verification schemes that compromise privacy
  4. Support parental empowerment instead of broad federal regulation
  5. Preserve an open, diverse, and free Internet for all Americans

Our Freedom Is at Stake

KOSA threatens the digital rights and freedoms of every U.S. citizen. The First Amendment does not need “protection” from lawmakers — it needs respect.

We urge every American who values free expression to stand with us.
