Stop insurers from penalising blameless drivers in accidents
The Issue
Two years ago, I was driving safely when another vehicle collided with mine, making it their clear fault. To my surprise, my insurance premium was unjustly increased by £150 annually for five years, totalling an unfair penalty of £750 for something I did not cause. This is an all too common experience for many drivers in the United Kingdom who find themselves penalised despite being the victims of others’ negligent actions.
Insurance companies claim these increases are due to the risk associated with being involved in an accident, regardless of fault. However, this policy fails to take into account that innocent drivers should not bear the financial burden of others’ mistakes. Data from the Association of British Insurers shows that premiums have risen on average by 20% over the past five years, with claim-free drivers often facing unjust hikes.
The current system is flawed and unjust. A no-fault accident should not lead to increased premiums. Consumers should be protected from unfair insurance practices that penalise them for merely being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
We must urge the UK Government and the Financial Conduct Authority to intervene and protect drivers by enforcing fair practices in the insurance industry. The law should require insurers to assess risks accurately and penalise only those at fault in accidents. Furthermore, there should be a mandatory review and capping of premium increases for those deemed blameless.
By signing this petition, we demand an end to the unfair increase of insurance premiums for accident victims who were not at fault. Let us stand together for justice and appeal to those in power for necessary reform that holds insurers accountable for truly fair pricing strategies. Your signature can make a difference.
