Stop illegal house repossessions and unfair council practices

Stop illegal house repossessions and unfair council practices
The Issue
My name is [Mark Coatsworth], and I have dedicated my life to caring for my mother. After her passing, I found myself fighting to retain the one place I have always called home. Despite having the legal right to succession, Gentoo Council is wrongfully and illegally attempting to repossess my house. They are imposing occupancy charges, bedroom taxes, and full council taxes on me, forcing me into debt while I struggle to make ends meet on universal credit.
This is not just my story; it is a reality faced by many individuals across the country who are subjected to the predatory practices of councils exploiting loopholes in housing policies. These councils are selling new build homes, initially intended for affordable housing, to those who can afford to buy, abandoning the very essence of what public housing is meant to serve — helping low-income individuals and families secure safe and sustainable homes.
The so-called 'bedroom tax' is another unjust practice. It penalizes people for living in homes with unused space, often forcing them from their longtime residences. This tax compels individuals into smaller, often less suitable accommodations, or into financial distress. It is an illegal, coercive measure that bullies us out of our homes and destabilizes already marginalized communities.
We call upon local councils, including Gentoo, to immediately halt any illegal repossession activities and to honor the legal rights of individuals to succeed family tenancies without harassment or undue charges. Councils must also cease selling new constructions meant for social housing to private buyers and ensure that these homes remain within the reach of those who need them the most.
Furthermore, we demand the immediate abolition of the bedroom tax. It is unjust and serves no purpose other than to burden individuals who are already economically vulnerable.
Please join us in demanding justice and fairness from our local councils. By signing this petition, we take a stand against the unfair treatment and illegal actions that so many face. Let's work together to ensure housing policies protect the people they are meant to serve.
