Stop Hosting Hate: Urge Exeter Venues To Reject Freedom Society Events
The Issue
I am reaching out to ask for your support in protesting against the Freedom Society. In recent years, this society has been at the centre of multiple scandals within the university, repeatedly making apologies for Islamophobia, transphobia, misogyny, racism, and other forms of discrimination. Despite this, the Guild has failed to take meaningful action, and investigations into hate speech have consistently fallen short.
As you are likely aware from the recent Expose publication, vile and abhorrent remarks against Muslims were made during a recent speaker event hosted by Freedom Society. Their prejudiced attitude has become common practice, and the Guild’s failure to uphold its own guidelines not only endangers minority students but also tarnishes the university’s reputation.
Due to this negligence, Exeter is increasingly perceived as an unwelcoming institution for minorities. We are already the least diverse university in the Russell Group - do we want our university to be further associated with hate and discrimination?
Some societies are already campaigning to boycott the White Hart, but we believe we can go further. Our goal is to make it harder for the Freedom Society to operate by launching a petition urging pubs and venues in Exeter to stop hosting their events, hoping that Freedom will no longer be able to find facilities to host their events. With the support of multiple societies, we can gather hundreds of signatures from members and non-members, promote the petition in the Forum, and ultimately send it to all pubs and venues in the city. This will build momentum to pressure the Guild into reopening its investigations and, hopefully, taking action.
We cannot allow hate to go unchallenged. Sign the petition now to stop Exeter venues from hosting the Freedom Society and send a clear message that discrimination has no place in our community. Every signature counts. Share this on your stories, drop it in your group chats, and encourage others to stand up against hate. Together, we can make a difference.
