Stop high rental fees for gymnasiums in the GTA
The Issue
I am reaching out because of a personal experience that has affected not just me but many others in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Recently, the cost of renting a gymnasium skyrocketed by over 800%. This drastic increase has essentially put a halt to community programs, sports teams, and recreational activities that rely on these spaces for their events and practices.
The GTA is known for being a hub of diversity and community engagement, but these exorbitant fees are creating barriers instead of fostering inclusion. I've witnessed basketball, hockey, volleyball teams and community fitness, groups disband because they can no longer afford to rent a space to gather. Children, teens and adults who greatly benefit from staying active, are missing out on opportunities crucial to their development and social interactions. This isn't just a spike in costs; this is a direct attack on our community's quality of life.
To those of you in positions of influence, we urge you to reconsider these rental fees. There are better ways to manage facilities without placing such an unjust burden on local organizations and individuals. Additionally, city and municipal stakeholders should seek partnerships and sponsorships from local businesses to subsidize costs, ensuring that financial constraints don’t stifle community access.
We deserve—and indeed, the community needs—affordable access to gymnasiums in the GTA. By reducing rental fees, we stand to support youth development, promote mental and physical well-being, and foster a sense of belonging for all ages. Let's make sure these precious community hubs remain open and accessible to everyone.
Please join me in taking this crucial step towards a more inclusive and active society. Sign this petition and help us bring change to the policies that currently restrain our communities.
