Stop H.R. 471: Protect Our Forests, Not Corporate Logging Interests

The Issue

Congress is pushing the so-called "Fix Our Forests Act" (H.R. 471)—but don’t be fooled. This legislation is first and foremost a logging bill disguised as wildfire “management,” enabling industrial deforestation in the name of fire prevention by gutting critical environmental protections.

At Biodiversity for a Livable Climate, we believe restoring ecosystems is the most powerful climate solution we have. Healthy landscapes—forests, grasslands, wetlands, and soils—are the foundation of a livable planet, regulating water cycles, cooling the earth, and sustaining biodiversity.

What’s at stake?
H.R. 471 encourages logging operations that threaten wetlands, destroy keystone species’ habitats, and threaten forest diversity—all of the things that naturally reduce wildfire risk.

The bill fast-tracks logging projects without proper environmental review, overriding laws like the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the Endangered Species Act (ESA)  as long as the projects are labeled fire prevention. True wildfire prevention starts by fostering resilient natural ecosystems, not by thinning forests.

The real solution? Nature itself.
Wet wood doesn’t burn. Adaptive forest ecosystems retain moisture, slow wind, and generate rainfall— natural protections against wildfires. Industrial logging replaces healthy forests with drier, more flammable landscapes.

  • Diverse forest ecosystems and healthy soils create a "soil sponge" that absorbs and holds water, reducing drought and fire intensity.
  • Beavers build firebreaks, sustain wetlands, and keep landscapes hydrated.
  • Regenerative grazing reduces flammable vegetation while enriching soil, creating natural fire resistance.

H.R. 471 ignores these realities. We need effective solutions, not easier logging disguised as fire prevention.

Sign on today to join us in telling the Senate to REJECT H.R. 471 and protect our forests from reckless, indiscriminate destruction!

Want to go the extra mile?
Call the U.S. Senate Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to speak with your senator. Let them know industrial logging is NOT an effective fire strategy, and even tends to increase wildfire threats to communities.
