Stop GENDERED MARKETING in Supermarkets

Stop GENDERED MARKETING in Supermarkets
The issue
Today I walked into a well known supermarket for some grocery shopping and came across the gift cards section of the store and to my surprise there were two of these gendered gift cards that were targeted for ‘him’ and ‘her’ and that’s not even where the problem starts. The ‘him’ gift card consists of brands like BCF, Supercheap Auto, Drummond Golf and Barbeques Galore with its packaging showcasing golf clubs, a football and some other tool work . CONTRASTING to the ‘her’ gift card consisting brands like David Jones, Seed, Swarovski, Bras n Things, T2 and Lorna Jane with the packaging showcasing a pink bra, a teapot, heels, diamonds and a pink lipstick.
What are these supermarkets trying to imply?
- That females don’t drive on own a car - which makes them NOT eligible for a gift card for Supercheap Auto?
- Starting a barbecue is only a ‘man’s job’ ?
- Or that all people who identify as females or go with the pronoun ‘her’ only care about buying pink heels, pink bras, diamonds, and makeup?
Such gendered marketing not only creates gender stereotypes in our daily lives but also alienates the LGBTIQ+ community using these pronouns.
And elimination of gendered marketing on general products is not just a need that is limited to supermarkets but also most of the things that we choose to buy and are displayed as targeted specifically to a gender.
This post is not targeted specifically to a supermarket but counts on every supermarket chain to stop using unnecessary gendered marketing.
I have emailed the supermarket I had been at today for their opinion and I kindly ask other supermarket owners or companies to take the initiate change regarding this.
Please sign this petition to show your support. We can do this - for you, me and for us.
