Growing up in Victoria, I've always valued the diverse educational environment here. However, recently, a wave of concern has swept across our community regarding the introduction of gender and LGBTQA education in schools. As a parent, and based on discussions with fellow parents, I've come to realize that many of us feel this specific type of education is not appropriate within the school curriculum.

Many parents believe that discussions about gender identity and the LGBTQA community should be left to the family. Schools are meant to provide a balanced education, focusing on traditional academics, and many argue that gender and sexual identity topics are personal matters best addressed at home.

A survey conducted among Victorian parents highlighted that a significant percentage feel uncomfortable with the current approach in schools. According to recent data, more than 60% of parents surveyed believe these topics should not be part of the school curriculum, fearing it might contradict family values or expose children to complex issues prematurely.

We understand the intention behind promoting inclusivity, but this should not infringe upon parental rights to choose the appropriate timing and method of discussing such topics with their children. Education around respect, acceptance, and understanding diversity can still be achieved through broader discussions around empathy, without delving into specifics that may not resonate with every family.

We are not against the existence and rights of individuals within the LGBTQA community; rather, we advocate for these discussions to remain a choice for parents outside the school system. This ensures respect for the diversity of opinions and values among families in Victoria.

We propose that the Department of Education revises the current curriculum to prioritize core academic subjects and facilitate understanding and respect through less controversial means. By investing in professional development for teachers around handling diverse classrooms and promoting environments where empathy and kindness are paramount, we can achieve balance without overstepping parental boundaries.
