STOP - Further reckless and irresponsible development by Northern Beaches Council

STOP - Further reckless and irresponsible development by Northern Beaches Council
The issue
THE CURLY PARKS COMMUNITY GROUP NEEDS YOUR HELP, PLEASE!
- STOP - Dangerous traffic conditions
- STOP - Unacceptable traffic chaos
- STOP - Congestion 7-nights a week
- STOP - Noise and light pollution
- STOP - Environmental damage
STOP THE LIGHTS
The Curl Curl and Freshwater neighbourhoods around the Freshwater Senior Campus, as well as the local residents around the parks at Frank Gray, Mike Pawley and Weldon Ovals, are about to be further impacted by reduced safety, local traffic congestion, restricted parking, more noise and light pollution. This is a unique environmental area, containing protected species, wildlife and a protected nature corridor adjacent to the park.
Northern Beaches Council is planning to erect floodlights at the Freshwater Senior Campus’s field to use 7-nights a week, sometimes as late as 9.15pm, for both competition and games. This is to cover the ever increasing demand for space from the AFL clubs, currently housed at Weldon Oval.
We are all very supportive of the Council’s goal to increase participation in sport and recreational activities. A wide variety of groups already use the fields every day, including hockey, AFL, soccer, baseball, cricket, school holiday programs and of course, we welcome all recreational users to the area.
We also understand the clubs need to grow, however, the Curl Curl precinct is intensively used and the local infrastructure simply cannot cope with the exponential growth of the biggest clubs.
Council must find another solution, other than just using the same fields, for more time every day and now, into the night. To accomodate the growth in the numbers of participants, the clubs could be decentralised and located at more suitable venues, with off street parking and change rooms that can better cater to their regional nature and have less impact on the natural habitat, local residents and families.
Council is planning to lodge a DA in September and start construction early in the new year, which means there is no time to waste. If we are to stop this, we need to act now!
