Surveillance cameras are  being installed all over New York City designed to collect your license plate data .  I have lived in New York for eleven years and just in the last two, these dystopian cameras have come to blanket our city. It is unacceptable.

There are private company installing their equipment in public areas to surveil us.

License plate readers collect information about vehicles as they move through public spaces. New Yorkers deserve to know how that data is stored, searched, and shared.

I have seen these cameras throughout my neighborhood of Harlem. New Yorkers deserve transparency about where these cameras are deployed and whether some communities face more surveillance than others.  If they are, that shows us that the cameras not here for our safety, but are instead here for control.

This surveillance technology must be driven out of New York: the supposed liberal bastion of our country.

Ask yourself, really ask your self. When has private company— much less a tech company— ever done something for the public benefit? That's right, never. 

And these cameras are no different. 

Surveillance cameras to collect and sell our data raise serious concerns about privacy and civil liberties. And, with a mayor in office like Zohran Mamdani, who professes to care for his constituents, now is the time for a public pressure campaign to get rid of this ever-expanding surveillance state.

License plate readers can create records of where vehicles are seen and when. New Yorkers deserve to know how this information is used, how long it is kept, and who can access it. New York City should ensure license plate surveillance data cannot become a tool for immigration enforcement or ICE raids.

Expanding surveillance technology also raises concerns about predictive policing, particularly in communities that already experience disproportionate policing.

We cannot let this dystopian future to happen and Mayor Mamdani has to the power to stop it. Let's show him that we want him to use that power.
