Stop flight path changes over Wynnum and the Bayside

Stop flight path changes over Wynnum and the Bayside
The issue
We, the undersigned residents of Wynnum North, West, and Central, Manly, Manly West, Hemmant, and wider Bayside communities, strongly oppose Airservices Australia's proposed 2026 “tight left turn” (Departures over land at night Package 3, option 4) night-time flight path trial for the following reasons:
It exposes approximately 50,000 new people to aircraft noise, impacting resident amenity, including:
- More noise
- Worsening living standards
- Poor sleep
- Windows shut to keep noise out (forget your bay breezes!)
- Impacts on mental health
- Devalued property prices
- More pollution, including lead
In 2023, AirServices already shifted a new flight path over Bayside communities.
- Every turboprop (propeller) aircraft is already directed over Bayside communities during the night and during the day for all turboprops heading south.
- This new flight path was proposed as a trial and eventually implemented without community consultation.
- Airservices Australia promised a review of this new flight path but failed to fulfil its promises or communicate the outcomes of such a review to the affected communities.
It defies community trust and consultation:
- Hundreds of Bayside residents have already objected to the original 2023 proposal.
- 571 formal objections
- 375 residents at a public meeting
- 1,818 petition signatures delivered to the Minister by MP Ross Vasta.
Airservices Australia publicly stated it would not proceed — this reversal undermines community trust and participation.
It repeats a rejected and dangerous plan that opens up opportunities to continue putting profit ahead of people.
- This trial reintroduces a version of the 2023 “early turn” flight path — one Airservices themselves rejected due to safety, noise, environmental, and operational risks.
- The proposed 2026 turn is even tighter than the 2023 version that was deemed unviable.
- It removes the Noise Abatement Procedure (NAP) that prevents the new runway from being used at night, which was a condition of project approval. By removing this condition, Airservices Australia will have the green light to use the new runway at night, potentially introducing even more flight paths as part of their plans to double the number of flights.
It violates previous safety and environmental findings:
- Airservices’ own 2023 assessment found this type of turn:
- “Introduces higher noise levels that are considered ‘significant’ under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999”
- Raises industry safety concerns, including “increase crew workload”, “risk of overbanking for some aircraft”, and “decreases aircraft performance”
- “Negatively impacts marine park ecosystems”
There is no Environmental Impact Assessment:
- Despite flying over the internationally protected Moreton Bay Ramsar Wetlands, no Environmental Impact Assessment has been conducted — this is unacceptable.
There are alternatives:
- This flight path is not a “preferred option.” There are other alternatives that do not shift noise and risk onto new communities, like a cap and curfew at Brisbane Airport.
We call on Airservices Australia to immediately withdraw the proposed 2026 “tight left turn” flight path trial (Departures over land at night Package 3, option 4) and uphold its 2023 assessment findings.
We demand that real, transparent consultation takes place and that no flight path over our homes and protected wetlands is trialled or implemented, ever.
