STOP ERASING HISTORY, SAVE IROQUOIS RIDGE

STOP ERASING HISTORY, SAVE IROQUOIS RIDGE
The Issue
Iroquois Ridge High School, located in Oakville, ON, Canada, is a pillar of our community. In 1990, through respectful community consultation, Iroquois Ridge High School was named after a geographical boundary of Lake Iroquois, which originally extended close to the present location of the school. Since then, thousands of youths from our community and internationally have been directly connected to the Indigenous history of this land and its original people.
Abruptly, without consultation with the students, parents, the urban Indigenous community, or our local community members, the Halton District School Board announced this historical schools name would be changed due to an anonymous letter and opinion ‘the word “Iroquois” was a derogatory term’.
We honour the name Iroquois Ridge as it reminds us of the sacrifices and resiliency of all Indigenous people and the connection to this beautiful land we call home. Through the principles of reconciliation, it is our collective community responsibility to ensure impactful changes as such require joint leadership, trust-building, accountability, and transparency. Our community does not believe these principles were practiced in this charge.
Sign, share and stand with our community to STOP Erasing History, and Save Iroquois Ridge
UPDATE:
Support Grandmother's Voice as they delegate at the next HDSB Board of Trustees meeting (April 3, 6pm) in support of transparent Indigenous consultation. View the livestream via HDSB YouTube channel or attend in person at 2050 Guelph Line Road
