Every time you open a credit card or update your address with a bank, that information goes straight to Equifax and Experian.

You probably assume it stays there.

It doesn't.

Those credit bureaus sell your home address to Thomson Reuters, a data broker that runs a surveillance tool called CLEAR. Thomson Reuters has sold access to CLEAR to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — with a new contract worth $125 million. ICE uses it to locate people without a warrant and without your knowledge or consent.

"No one signing up for a credit card thinks they're giving data brokers a thumbs-up to sell their personal information to ICE," Senator Ron Wyden told 404 Media. "Not only is it an outrageous violation of our privacy, it's impossible for Americans to opt out."

This isn't just about immigration enforcement. ICE is also using this same data to investigate alleged voter fraud — and because data profiles can be inaccurate, the wrong person could be targeted. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) had proposed a rule to close this loophole, but the Trump administration dismantled the agency before it could act.

Equifax, Experian, and Thomson Reuters are profiting from a system that funnels your personal financial data to federal law enforcement — without your consent and without a court order. We're calling on them to stop, and on Congress to close the legal loophole that makes it possible.
