The Issue

AJH Automotive, a beloved family-run garage in Durham, is facing an existential threat. We've spent decades building our business, providing excellent service to a loyal customer base, and creating a successful enterprise employing over 17 dedicated staff, which includes four promising apprentices. However, in a shocking revelation during a visit from three council representatives, we were informed of plans by Durham County Council to enforce yellow lines and a pay and display parking system right outside our garage. This decision, if implemented, would severely jeopardise our ability to operate effectively. This street is primarily used for business use. The business is located in the Dragonville Industrial Estate (on Dragon Lane, Durham), which is a dedicated commercial and industrial zone rather than a residential zone or a major public traffic bottleneck.  Huge Tesco Lorry’s are allowed to turn into the estate to access their loading bays.
Our garage is more than just a place of work; it's a community hub where trust is built over time with the people we serve. We've cultivated a unique environment where skill and dedication translate into customer satisfaction. The proposed parking restrictions could lead to a significant decline in clientele, as quick and convenient access to our services would be hindered. This, in turn, risks dismantling years of hard work and commitment overnight. In effect it means that our business would not be able to operate.

The council's decision feels unprecedented and neglectful towards the interests of small businesses and the local working population. It is surprising and disappointing that our local representatives, who should be nurturing economic growth and community welfare, are instead introducing hurdles. A lot of businesses are unable to operate in the town centre and now it seems, the council are spreading this operation to the outskirts.

There is a more sensible solution: instead of imposing these detrimental parking restrictions, the council could engage with local businesses to find a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Supporting AJH Automotive is supporting your local economy and employment. We urge our community, patrons, and local leaders to stand with us in this hour of need. Let's raise our voices to halt the council's current planning and press for a fair and practical alternative. Please sign this petition to protect AJH Automotive, our dedicated staff, and the valuable services we provide. Your support can make a difference.

thank you
