Massachusetts is still allowing millions of gallons of untreated sewage to be dumped into waterways like the Alewife Brook.

This happens through a combined sewer system, where stormwater and sewage share the same pipes. During heavy rain, the system overflows — releasing raw sewage directly into public waterways.

In 2025 alone, there were 23 sewage discharges into Alewife Brook.

Residents have reported getting sick after contact with the water. These waterways run through parks, neighborhoods, and recreational areas used by the public every day.

Despite this, officials approved a plan that will continue sewage releases during storms, instead of fully separating the sewer system — a known long-term solution.

We call on:

Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA)
State and local leaders
to commit to full sewer separation and end sewage dumping into public waterways.
