Stop Dog Breeding — Adopt!

The Issue

I have personally witnessed the devastating consequences of dog breeding and puppy mills. Dogs, innocent creatures that they are, have been euthanized or left to suffer from countless congenital and hereditary illnesses due to these cruel practices. It's a heart-wrenching sight that no one should ever have to see.

Dog breeding and puppy mills prioritize profit over the welfare of these animals. They are often kept in overcrowded conditions with little regard for their health or happiness. According to The Humane Society of the United States, there are an estimated 10,000 puppy mills in the U.S., both licensed and unlicensed (HSUS, 2020). These operations produce approximately 2 million puppies per year while millions of dogs in shelters wait for homes.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) states that many pet store puppies come from puppy mills where their mothers spend their entire lives in cramped cages or kennels with little or no personal attention or quality human interaction (ASPCA, n.d.). This is not just a matter about animal welfare but also about consumer rights - people who purchase these puppies often face high veterinary bills addressing issues common among dogs bred in such conditions.

We must put an end to this cycle of cruelty. We urge lawmakers and enforcement agencies at all levels - local, state, national - to take action against dog breeding facilities that do not meet appropriate standards for animal care. We call upon them to strengthen laws regulating dog breeding practices and ensure stricter enforcement.
