However, the rapid and unchecked development of data centers poses severe risks to our environment, public health, and cultural landmarks.

Arizona is already grappling with heightened levels of pollution, and our community's health reflects this. The construction and operation of data centers significantly contribute to air pollution and water scarcity. These facilities are large consumers of electricity, often relying on fossil fuels, which in turn emit greenhouse gases and lead to increased prevalence of respiratory illnesses among residents. Studies from reputable sources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlight the correlation between pollution and health issues, warning against further exacerbation of these conditions.

Moreover, our state’s rich history, encapsulating prehistoric treasures like Wholly Mammoth remains and countless historical landmarks, is at stake. The potential destruction or damage to these irreplaceable sites by expanding data centers is a price too high to pay.

There are viable alternatives to situating data centers within our densely populated and environmentally sensitive areas. Local government officials need to prioritize policies that protect our natural and cultural environment while still fostering economic growth from technological investments. By setting stringent regulations and developing incentives for the use of renewable energy within data centers, Arizona can tap into technological progress without sacrificing its heritage or the health of its citizens.
