Stop Coventry City Council from using Palantir

The Issue

As you know Lady Godiva rode through Coventry, in her unique way, to make a stand for the people of Coventry. This same spirit is needed for the current campaign. In terms of analogy, the streets were cleared so she would not be seen but someone violated the "data request", a guy named Tom (yes, the invention of the phrase "PeepingTom" is from Coventry). Tom went blind. We need to put Palantir into the Tom category as they look to peep on Coventry's most vulnerable.

Coventry City Council is considering adopting Palantir, a technology firm known for its data analytics and surveillance tools, to manage and oversee public services in our city. This decision poses significant risks to our privacy and civil liberties, as Palantir has a history of controversial partnerships with law enforcement and government agencies globally.

Palantir’s technology has been utilised in various settings that have led to concerns about privacy invasion and data misuse. For instance, the company’s involvement with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has led to widespread criticism due to the role Palantir’s software played in tracking and deporting individuals. This history casts doubt on whether such a company should be trusted with our personal data.

Moreover, the use of sophisticated data analytics tools could lead to increased surveillance and profiling of our community members. The nature of these tools raises questions about who has access to our data, how it will be used, and what measures will be in place to protect our privacy. We must ensure that personal data is handled with the utmost care and prioritise technologies that enhance, not undermine, public trust.

To protect the citizens of Coventry, we urge the City Council to reconsider their plans and seek alternatives that are transparent, ethical, and respectful of individual privacy. Local solutions that engage communities, safeguard data, and maintain public trust are needed to effectively manage public services.

Sign this petition to demand that Coventry City Council reject the use of Palantir for public services and protect our community's rights. Please share this with your network.
